A Castlerea Councillor is calling for progress to be made on a safety scheme for the town in 2023.
Nigel Dineen says locals and businesses have raised concerns over the volume of traffic and speed at which cars pass through Castlerea.
He says the scheme was initially mentioned over 5 years ago and while Transport Infrastructure Ireland has carried out some modelling and surveying he wants to see work starting this year.
The Independent representative proposed as part of the measures that a mini roundabout be placed at the junction of Main Street and the Ballindrimley road at Hell’s Kitchen.
At a Roscommon M.D.meeting on Thursday Councillor Paschal Fitzmaurice echoed Councillor Dineen’s remarks and stated the real need for the safety scheme along the busy national N60 route.
Councillor Dineen hopes to have a further update in the Spring.
'They were on about maybe putting traffic lights in place, maybe at Hell's Kitchen, but I think the right thing to do there is put in a roundabout and it'll help the traffic flow better, as opposed to having the traffic back up at traffic lights.
I think the plan going forward is that it goes to the roads department of Roscommon County Council and they will put a design in place , TII have done a survey on the area so hopefully now come the Spring, that we will have more information on it and that the works will start in 2023.'
