A Fine Gael councillor for close to 40 years, Adie was first co-opted to his father's seat after he passed away.

Tributes are being paid to a long serving former Longford County Councillor following his passing today. Well known Lanesboro man Adie Farrell passed away in Mullingar Hospital today. A Fine Gael councillor for close to 40 years, Adie was first co-opted to his father's seat after he passed away.

The councillor, who has been described as the father of Fine Gael in Longford lost his seat in the 2009 local elections. Outside of politics, Mr Farrell was a long serving chairman of Lanesboro Community College's board of Management. Longford-based Fine Gael Senator Micheál Carrigy said Mr Farrell was political and community powerhouse:
