The death of Cllr John Naughten has been described as an enormous tragedy for his family and the wider South Roscommon and Athlone areas.
Gardai confirmed to Shannonside FM this morning that his body was found in Drum, Athlone, yesterday evening and they say foul play is not suspected. The Drum native has been a councillor since 2004 and was recently chosen to represent Fine Gael in the general election in Roscommon-Galway.
Cathaoirleach of Roscommon County Council, Paschal Fitzmaurice said the county is in shock following the death of councillor Naughten, adding that he was a 'true gentleman'. Cllr Sean Moylan said John was a great man and a great colleague that was a mentor to all new councillors that was elected in June.
In a social media post, Monksland Town Team said that they were “saddened at hearing of the sudden passing of Cllr John Naughten. John was a true gentleman, who always had a smile on his face. John has worked alongside the team since the beginning and his contribution has been invaluable. Our deepest condolences to his family and friends.”
Fine Gael has issued a statement on John's passing this afternoon. “We regret to announce the untimely death of our friend and colleague, Cllr. John Naughten; our condolences to his wife Breda, their three children and the wider Naughten family. He will be much missed. May he Rest In Peace.”
