A local Garda is being remembered as a vital part of training and guiding generations of young Gardaí.
Garda Damien Sharkey passed away on Saturday 20th of July at his home in Tipperary.
Originally from Templemichael Terrace in Longford Town, Damien joined the Gardaí in 1996 and became a member in 1997.
He transferred to the Garda College in Templemore in 2001 where he spent 23 years as a mentor to hundreds of Gardaí who passed through college.
A tribute on the Garda College Facebook page, described how the Longford man was posted to frontline policing duties in Templemore Garda Station during the Pandemic, where he was of great assistance to the community during a tough time.
Hundreds of Gardaí have been paying tribute to Garda Sharkey online, thanking him for his guidance during their training.
Damien is survived by his wife Joan and three daughters Abbey, Polly and Mia.
He will repose tomorrow from 5pm until 8pm at Keller's Funeral Home in Nenagh, with his funeral taking place at 12 noon on Thursday in the Church of the Holy Spirit.
