Nicola Murphy, who lived in Scramogue, died earlier today while aged in her mid-40s.

Tributes are being paid to a popular Strokestown resident who has died after a battle with motor neurone disease. Nicola Murphy, who lived in Scramogue, died earlier today while aged in her mid-40s.

She is originally from Ahascragh, Co Galway, and her maiden name was Brennan.

Her husband is Joe Murphy, who was a Roscommon county councillor between 2016 and 2024.

Nicola was diagnosed with the disease in September 2023, and a fundraising appeal raised over €83,000 to assist with her care.

Local councillor Valerie Byrne says today's news is devastating.
