TUS consent classes playing major role in student sexual violence awareness

The survey showed that most students felt safe from sexual violence or harassment at their accommodation and around campus.

The Head of the Student Counselling Service at TUS Athlone says third level education is playing a significant role in raising awareness on sexual violence and harassment.

Treasa Fox was commenting on the results of a new survey which shows a large percentage of students in this country have been victims of assault, or harassment.

The survey was conducted in April and May of last year by the Higher Education Authority with almost 8,000 students responding across the country.

The survey showed that most students felt safe from sexual violence or harassment at their accommodation and around campus.

Treasa Fox, who is also a counselling psychologist, says the Higher Education Authority is taking a good lead in dealing with these issues in society, and young people attending Athlone for the past three years have been given special classes on the topic:
