It's hoped new opportunities provided by the TUI will stop the skill drain from rural Ireland.

The new Technological University of the Shannon: Midlands Midwest will be a key element of local rural regeneration according to its newly announced President.

Professor Vincent Cunnane, outgoing president of Limerick Institute of Technology, will take up the new role when the TUI is established on the first of October.

The announcement was made this morning by Minister for Further and Higher Education Simon Harris who says Professor Cunnane's vast experience makes him perfectly positioned to lead the new institution, comprising of the Athlone Institute of technology and Limerick IT.
