Roscommon's Eugene Murphy has lost his seat in the Seanad - ending a streak of 40 consecutive years as a public representative.
But two Shannonside Northern Sound councillors are in strong contention to become senators for the first time.
Eugene Murphy has been a mainstay in politics in Roscommon since 1985 when he became a councillor - a position he retained in every election until 2016, when he vacated it to become a TD in Roscommon-Galway.
He lost his seat in the Dáil in 2020 but was elected to the Seanad.
This time, though, there's no comeback story.
He recently quit Fianna Fail - after they refused to allow him to run in the general election - and stood in the Seanad elections as an Independent, on the agricultural panel, but he has failed to get elected.
There are 11 seats up for grabs, but Murphy finished 24th of the 28 candidates and was eliminated on the eighth count.
Ballinasloe senator Aisling Dolan, from Fine Gael, and Leitrim council cathaoirleach Paddy O'Rourke, from Fianna Fail, were also not in the fix and were eliminated soon after.
But Longford councillor Paraic Brady, from Fine Gael, and Cavan councillor Sarah O'Reilly, from Aontu, are in the hunt for two of the 11 seats.
Brady's in fifth place and O'Reilly's in ninth, with 16 counts done.
They should know their fate later today, with counting resumed at 9.30 this morning.
