Two local winners of the Roscommon Longford Garda Youth Awards are set to be presented with national awards next month. The 'Go Yellow' project from Longford Town and Cormac Petrie from Knockcroghery were each recognised for their contribution to the community. Cormac is currently the youngest member of the Roscommon Civil Defence Unit and in April of this year, used his training to rescue someone who had gotten into difficulty swimming at the Hodson Bay Amenity near Athlone. He was presented with the Special Achievement award while Go Yellow received the Group award.
The Go Yellow project is run by Longford Students Maria McGlynn, Shauna Nolan, Aoibheann Brennan-Grennan and Ava Finneran and raised over €30,000 for Children's Health Ireland. The fundraising drive came about after Maria saw the work of healthcare staff in treating her twin brothers Edward and Patrick who were born at 24 weeks old and experienced a number of medical difficulties. Both winners will now be presented with a national award at a special event on the 16th of November. Maria McGlynn from Go Yellow says she hopes their work will inspire other students:
