Two men have been arrested following an attempted robbery of a taxi driver outside Athlone yesterday evening.
According to local Gardaí two males entered the vehicle at 9pm in Athlone before directing it to drive onto the motorway.
During the trip, the suspects are accused of stopping the taxi, assaulting the driver and attempting to rob him.
The victim is reported to have gotten away from the vehicle with the car keys, with Gardaí arriving on the scene during the incident.
The taxi driver received minor injuries but did not require hospital treatment.
The two men, in their 20s and 30s, are currently being held in custody at Athlone Garda Station with investigations are ongoing.
