Two Shannonside politicians were elected as MEPs last night after a count in Castlebar that took over five days. Castlerea's Luke 'Ming' Flanagan secured the first seat after exceeding the quota by over 5,000 votes in the 19th count. Ballyleague resident Ciaran Mullooly was elected on the 21st count, in the former reporter's first election. He secured the fifth seat after a battle with Sinn Fein's Michelle Gildernew, from Co Tyrone. The other seats went to Fianna Fáil's Barry Cowan and Fine Gael's Maria Walsh and Nina Carberry. Ming was overjoyed after being elected to the European Parliament for the third time.
Mullooly, from Independent Ireland, thinks the Shannonside region will benefit from having two MEPs living in Roscommon.
