Uisce Éireann has confirmed that it intends to apply for planning permission for a long-awaited upgrade to the Ballymahon Waste Treatment Plant early next year, and that a new plant would be in operation by 2027.
The news came following a meeting of Uisce Eireann management with Fianna Fáil TD Joe Flaherty and local councillors, Pat O'Toole and Mick Cahill.
The current Ballymahon plant is effectively working at full capacity and this has inhibited further development in the town.
The meeting also heard that the utility company are still looking for a technology-led solution for Edgeworthstown where the waste treatment plant has also been maxed out.
Deputy Flaherty says the upgrade of the Ballymahon facility would allow for the development of a further 500 homes in the town:
