A local TD says it is completely unacceptable that nursing staff had to threaten to protest outside Sligo University Hospital in order to highlight concerns over work practices.
INMO members were due to hold a demonstration at the hospital this lunchtime after weeks of concerns over staffing and overcrowding at the north-west facility.
This morning the nursing trade union confirmed that the protest was deferred due to further engagement and negotiation with the hospital management and the HSE.
Sligo-Leitrim TD Marian Harkin says it's shocking that nurses had to go within hours of staging a demonstration to get the HSE to engage with their worries:
"It is completely unacceptable when staff have to threaten to protest outside the hospital in order to have an assessment of the unsafe working conditions and very poor working conditions.
The fact that so many staff are facing burnout and huge workplace stress, that's really bad for staff, but it's equally bad for people who have to go to the hospital.
