It's unfair to expect teenagers leaving secondary school to choose a life profession according to a lecturer in a local further education college.
Nessa Griffin from the Longford College of Further Education says that the choice on what direction to take in life can cause massive pressure.
Speaking to Shannonside FM news, the staff member says that shorter PLC courses can help students get a taster of their chosen subject or profession before committing time and money.
The college is to hold an open day this week at their Battery Road base in the town, with the event taking place from 10am to 6pm on Wednesday the 1st of March.
Nessa is urging the young, old and those in-between who are contemplating further education to call by on the day.
"So many of our young people don't know what they want and we as a society ask them "what are you going to do when you leave school, what is it you want to do?" and that's quite a daunting task for a 16/17/18 year old to answer. They get a taste of college life here but we also take care of them,. We're not mothering them but what we're doing is minding them and looking after them".
