A Leitrim Councillor is calling on Irish Water to provide funding for additional capacity at the Carrick-on-Shannon Water Treatment Plant.
At a meeting of the local authority this week the Sean McGowan noted the supply restrictions and burst pipes which impacted customers in the lead up to Christmas due to heavy frost.
The meeting heard the plant water usage increased by 20 per cent during the cold spell which was mainly attributed to leaks arising from the frost and taps been left running.
Council officials confirmed it's hoped some work will be approved by Irish Water to marginally enhance the capacity of the plant over the coming year, however such works may take some time to complete.
Councillor McGowan believes Irish Water must be forthcoming with funding as the treatment plant is unable to keep up with the demand leaving some home-owners without mains water:
I'm calling on Irish water to provide funding to carry out additional capacity and storage at the treatment plant at Carrick on Shannon .
There's a couple of areas I've gotten calls from where water supplies just aren't able to get there.
The two main reservoirs, the lower Mong and the Higher Mong, which serve the south Leitrim area.
Both of those reservoirs are under pressure nearly all the time.
We need reliable services there.
