An urgent flood assessment is needed for residents in Strokestown according to a local Senator.
Eugene Murphy claims residents and business owners on Lower Bridge Street in the town faced severe flooding over the weekend.
The Fianna Fail Senator says that recent torrential rain has shown that pipe work in the area designed to alleviate the problem is backing up, with manholes within buildings overflowing.
He's called for an urgent assessment of the infrastructure to identify the issues with pipe systems in the town and take action as soon as possible.
Speaking to Shannonside FM News Senator Murphy says that the river in the town can take the floodwater, but the pipework must be sufficient to transport it.
''There's water coming up in parts of other buildings where it seems to be coming from shore or some other area so we have to sort that out and maybe we might have to increase the size of the pipes and I hope the council and Transport Infrastructure Ireland will take that into account because of course it is the N5. People in business were distraught and distressed, I went to see some of them on Sunday evening, it was incredible to see the water flowing out of manholes in buildings.''
