President Biden also sent a video message and letter of congratulations when the Roscommon Hospice was opened in 2021.

Meanwhile, the parish priest of Knock says it's a great honour to have the US President at the Shrine today.

Father Richard Gibbons says they are welcoming the president as a 'pilgrim' rather than a US official.

In the afternoon, the President will arrive at the Shrine, where he will pray privately in the apparition chapel and be told the history of Knock.

He will also receive a piece of the original gabel wall from the Shrine as a gift. Speaking on the Joe Finnegan show, Father Gibbons says people are very proud of Knock hosting President Biden despite his visit being a private one:

'It is a very private visit but there is a great atmosphere around the town. I was walking up the road last evening and it reminded me exactly the evening before the visit of Pope Francis .People were in a wonderful, excited mood and they understood the fact that they can't get as close to the President as the People of Louth.'
