Over 170 additional homes are required in Leitrim to meet the demand for social housing.
Leitrim County Council has published a new plan which aims to deliver a majority of one and two-bedroom homes in the next four years to slash the current waiting list.
Under this plan, which forms a nationwide effort to tackle the housing crisis, Leitrim County Council hopes to achieve a social housing target of 30 properties this year - and over the course of the next four years, 139 social housing units.
The largest demand for social housing is in the south of the county in areas such as Leitrim Village, Carrick-on-Shannon, Jamestown, Drumsna and Annaduff.
According to a recent housing assessment, 146 one and two-bedroom homes are required, and 31 three and four-bed homes to meet demand.
82% of the proposed units under the new plan will be split evenly between urban infill and greenfield sites- with 18% based in brownfield sites.
The council also hopes that 68 currently vacant units will be brought back into use, with 14 homes in unfinished estates and 98 new builds also forming part of the project.
The council also intends to purchase lands to develop the social housing projects, in Carrick, Kinlough and Ballinamore.
Additional off-site infrastructure is also required, including an enhancement of the water network and wastewater systems in certain areas. such as Carigallen and Keshcarrigan.
