The cathaoirleach of the Granard Municipal District believes a vacant property tax will benefit the town.
Councillor Paraic Brady says the measure is needed to encourage the owners of vacant business and residential properties to use their land.
At a recent meeting of the the Granard MD, councillors were given the chance to examine the new action plan for the North Longford Town.
According to councillors, the presentation showed the serious problem facing Granard when it comes to derelict buildings and land.
The action plan for the region sets out a number of quick win projects that experts say could significantly benefit the area in the short term with minor supports.
These include the formation of a multi disciplinary team to develop a public realm scheme for Granard and the repurposing of Barrack Street among others.
