Sam Verdon’s double saw Longford Town claim the bragging rights as they dispensed of Athlone Town by two goals to nil.
Sam Verdon’s double just before half-time sealed the el classico victory for Town and their first win since the season resumed.
Verdon opened the scoring five minutes before the break, converting a low curling effort after Longford had put significant pressure on the visitors.
Verdon doubled the lead two minutes later, this time from the six-yard box into an open net after being picked out by Rob Manley.
Longford could have had a couple more, Manley coming close on the stroke of half-time and Athlone keeper Aaron Myles denying Manley twice more in the second half.
