A man has pleaded guilty to importing €8.4 million worth of cocaine into Abbeyshrule Aerodrome in Co Longford two years ago.

Fifty-six-year-old Tim Gilchrist Junior of Mavis Bank, Newrath, Waterford, pleaded guilty at a sitting of Mullingar Circuit Criminal Court yesterday.

He had previously pleaded guilty to possessing cocaine for sale or supply at Lough Owel, Irishtown, Co Westmeath, on the same date, August 4, 2022.

He will be sentenced on Thursday.

Irish Independent journalist Liam Cosgrove says Judge Keenan Johnson made a number of comments during yesterday's sitting.
