Newly announced rural regeneration funding for Longford will see the renovation of a significant local historical site.
The Rose Cottage in Ballinalee has received €236,000 to complete renovation works ongoing at the site for years.
The location was the home of General Sean Mac Eoin during the War of Independence.
Known as the Blacksmith of Ballinalee, the Longford man was a senior IRA leader, Irish Army General and senior politician before dying at the age of 79 in 1973.
It's planned to turn the site into a visitor attraction featuring an exhibition centre telling the story of General Sean Mac Eoin.
Speaking to Let's Talk today, Local Historian Fr. Tom Murray says he hopes Rose Cottage will become a popular tourist destination.
"It's not just going to be an exhibition space or interpretative centre we are hoping too it will be a cafe or coffee shop.
Ballinalee is at a crossroads to Granard, to Aughnacliffe so a lot of people passing through and a lot of tourists hopefully passing through too will stop off and have some refreshments and view the exhibition space and learn a lot more about Longford's contribution to the War of Independence."
