Two sisters of a man who was missing in Strokestown for six years say they believe his death is suspicious.
Tomas Martinkus, 29, was last seen at his home in Forge Hill in the north Roscommon town at around 5am on December 19, 2018.
The Lithuanian man had been living and working in the area for the previous two years.
A major search operation took place after he vanished over six years ago, but it yielded no positive result.
However, his skeletal remains were found on farmland in Strokestown last month, on December 1.
Gardai do not suspect foul play, but two of his sisters, Marija and Viktorija, said: "We believe his death is suspicious.
"His body was found near the house in the fields and we don't understand how nobody could find him in six years.
"He must have been underground. That's the only explanation.
"Helicopters, dogs and so many people around the whole area were looking for him. We do not believe his death was an accident."
They also thanked the local community for their help.
They added: "We also want to thank all volunteers, Tom's friends, police officers, all strangers who did not remain indifferent to the search for Tom, sincere thanks.
"We are glad that he had so many good people around him."
It's understood gardai have told Tomas's family they may never know what happened to him.
In an official statement, the gardai said: "Gardaí in Co Roscommon received a report of the discovery of skeletal remains on farmland in Strokestown on December 1, 2024.
"A technical examination of the scene was carried out and the remains were subsequently determined by a Forensic Anthropologist to be those of a human male.
"The deceased was identified through DNA analysis and Gardaí are liaising with his family and providing support.
"A file will be prepared for the coroner.
"Following the discovery, the missing person appeal in respect of Tomas Martinkus has been stood down."
