Gusts of up to 180 kilometres per hour can be expected and Met Éireann is warning of a danger to life and treacherous travelling conditions.

Met Éireann says Friday morning will see severe, damaging and destructive winds with gusts of up to 130 kilometres per hour widely across the country- and even higher gusts for a time.

The forecaster says it's continuously monitoring the situation and weather warnings will be issued as confidence in the forecast improves.

It comes into effect from 6pm and will stay in place until 9am tomorrow. 

Any overnight mist or foggy patches are expected to lift later this morning.

Some were closed for up to four days after low temperature and ice warnings were in place.

The low temperature and ice alert starts at 7pm this evening and ends at 8am tomorrow morning.

Sub-zero temperatures have resulted in dozens of school and business closures across the region.
