A major rowing event planned for Carrick-on-Shannon this weekend has been cancelled due to the weather.
Hundreds of rowers were due to attend the Head of the Shannon but Carrick on Shannon Rowing Club has confirmed it has been postponed in light of the poor forecast over the coming days
It is the second time the event has been cancelled in the last number of months due to weather issues.
The following statement has been issued this afternoon:
"We have reviewed the forecast again and the wind is now strengthening throughout the day and will be too high to ensure safe racing.
"The added challenge of Wind-chill and the flow on the river have all been considered in making this decision. It is once again with a heavy heart that we have come to the decision to cancel the event.
As you can appreciate, safety of all is our primary concern.
We look forward to meeting you throughout the rest of the rowing season."
