Met Eireann says north west winds will be very strong at times with high waves expected in some parts of the country.

Residents described squally winds resembling a tornado in the area.

Cathal Nolan from Ireland's Weather Channel, is advising the public to exercise caution this weekend and to make sure all loose objects around homes and gardens are taken indoors.

The zone is the most elevated stretch of road in County Longford and during the winter months it can be extremely treacherous.

Schools in Counties with Red or Orange warnings are being urged not to open until 10am.

It comes as Ireland prepares for more severe weather conditions with the arrival of Storm Ciarán tomorrow.

The airport is closed this morning due to heavy fog affecting maintenance works, with the operator saying they expect the airport to reopen soon.

Met Eireann says the county will see intense rainfall over a relatively short amount of time from 11am until 6pm.
