A west Roscommon national school has launched a campaign for enhanced safety measures along the N60.
Carrick N.S. in Ballinlough are calling on the Minister for Transport, local authority and Transport Infrastructure Ireland to implement a number of changes along the stretch of road.
The local primary school which is located one kilometre from the village is calling for urgent action to ensure the safety of pedestrians, cyclists and all road users.
At present there is no footpath, cycle lane or crossing point linking the school to Ballinlough village where the majority of its 94 pupils live.
A petition has been now launched which asks the relevant authorities for active travel infrastructure, including traffic calming measures, a cycle lane linking Carrick school and Ballinlough village as well as a speed reduction.
A 100km/hr speed limit is in operation outside the school gates however several speed surveys conducted by the school during school drop-off times revealed 17% of traffic exceeded the speed limit.
The petition which is available to sign at O'Connor's or Daybreak Ballinlough states the local road infrastructure needs urgent improvement to increase connectivity and allow the numerous young families, pedestrians, cyclists and other road-users safe access to local amenities and schools.
