Members of Lanesborough-Ballyleague Credit Union are set to have a wider range of options for their money from the beginning of October.
It follows the announcement of a merger with the North Midlands Credit union which covers a substantial area of both Longford and Westmeath already.
Several other similar moves are taking places across the country as Credit Unions aim to develop new products and services.
Derek Smith says the transfer will result in a short closure of Lanesborough Credit union at the end of the month, but people will then have access to the new services.
"The branch will remain in the town. There will be an increase in the services and loan products like reduced interest rates, and an enhanced range of services like current accounts, debit cards, and online services. We would plan to have a short closure towards the end of September or beginning of October and on the 4th of October, the credit union will open as a member of North Midlands Credit Union with a full range of services"
