The well known Wineport Lodge in Glasson has been given the green light to add a pool and wellness centre to its offering on the banks of Lough Ree.
Westmeath County Council has granted permission for the two storey extension at Portaneena which will include a small pool, reception, changing, waiting and relaxation areas with treatment rooms as well as a new balcony serving existing rooms on the first floor.
As part of the planning conditions, proprietors Ray Byrne and Jane English will have to implement all of the measures included in two Natura Impact Statements which they were required to prepare for the process.
An objection from local residents cited concerns about habitat on Lough Ree; the sprawling nature of the lodge since its inception; parking of coaches and sightlines for traffic entering and exiting the site.
Any appeals to the decision of Westmeath County Council will have to be lodged to An Bord Pleanala by Tuesday December 22nd.
