A two-inch piece of wood found in soup and a rat running out of shop doors are among the complaints made to the Food Safety Authority about premises or products in the Shannonside region in the last 15 months.
Complaints made to the FSAI also include staff not wearing masks and the discovery of a large spider in an apple tart.
Overall 47 complaints were logged by the Food safety authority about premises or food products in the Shannonside region between January of last year and this month.
18 complaints related to unfit food, including a 6 cm piece of wood found in a soup, hair found in slice pan and kebab, products sold past their use-by date and a large spider in an apple tart.
14 complaints were connected to issues around hygiene standards including a rat running out of the shop doors, a very strong smell of raw sewage in the shop and staff handling food and money without washing their hands.
Other issues included a piece of plastic inside one a cooked sausage, food poisoning after consuming food from a takeaway and an unregistered food business operating from domestic premises.
Overall two closure orders were served in Roscommon in the last two years, with one improvement notice also issued in Roscommon and one prohibition order served in Longford last year.
