Work is set to begin on the public realm scheme in Roscommon town early next month.
Among the improvements included in the plan are changes to the traffic flow around the Square, widening of footpaths, the removal of car parking, and the creation of more pedestrian and public realm space.
While construction was set to begin this month, it is now hoped it will get underway on March 5th beginning on the Athlone road towards Goff street up to the bank on the corner of Church street and Main street.
Engineers in Roscommon County Council expect the project to take up to eight to 12 months, finishing with the area around the Square.
The project will also coincide with plans by Irish Water for the upgrading of the sewer network in the town, beginning in June, a project estimated to cost 15 million euro.
It's envisaged though that some of this work may take place overnight.
Councillor Orla Leyden says it's important that businesses and the public are kept up to date on the scheme as it progresses.
