Work has begun this week to replace the windows of the former Providers building at the corner of Richmond Street and Main Street in Longford town.
The building was bought by Longford County Council in 2017 and plans were made to develop it into an innovation and technological hub.
Different options had been explored since then with regard to refurbishing the building or demolishing it.
Local Fianna Fail councillor Seamus Butler says the project has moved very slowly in recent years but he's delighted to see work beginning now.
He says the work hub part of the building is more important now than ever, and he's hopeful that local public events can now take place in it while the refurbishment continues.
