Work has begun on the construction of an overflow pipe at Lough Funshinagh in south Roscommon.
Hundreds of acres have been underwater for the last five years since the major floods of 2015.
Pumps have been maintained on a 24/7 basis from early this year at a number of homes and some residents have had to move out while a solution was approved.
As request to install the overflow pipe by Roscommon Chief Executive Eugene Cummins was approved by the OPW on May 20th.
Councillor Laurence Fallon says it's a great day for the area after a gruelling few years.
