Work is underway over the Easter break to provide three new classrooms at St Teresa's special school in Ballinasloe.
A long running campaign to get a new school building was successful last year, and the build has been included in a fast-track scheme that will see the project co-ordinated by a professional external Project Manager.
The school caters for around 40 pupils and caters to a wide catchment area across Galway, Roscommon, Offaly and Westmeath.
Roscommon TD Denis Naughten says the temporary classrooms are very welcome while the pupils and teachers wait for their new building.
"The current classrooms are really inadequate to meet the needs of the school and this is a very positive development. These are temporary classrooms pending construction of a new state of the art school and i've got confirmation now from the Minister for Education that it's going to be part of a fast track process within the Department which will hopefully see this new school built and tender for this design element of it is out at present".
