The structure in Rockingham Estate near Boyle, was built 1839 as a hunting/fishing lodge on the eastern shore of Lough Key.

Works to construct new parapets or battlements on an almost 200 hundred year old castle in Roscommon will require a planning application.

That's the decision of An Bord Pleanála following a review over the last number of months to decide if the project at Cloontykilla Castle in Boyle could be considered an exempted development.

The structure had been in a significant state of ruin up to circa 2008 when works commenced to renovate and alter the structure following a grant of planning permission to restore the structure.

Following the decision by the higher planning authority, any further developments of battlements on the castle will require a full planning application to Roscommon County Council.
