It's expected works on the Roscommon town main drainage scheme will be finished in eighteen months.
The project began recently on the Antogher Road and it's hoped it will be finished by Christmas 2022.
The €20 million investment will improve the water quality in the River Jiggy and River Hind, as well as increasing the capacity of the sewer network in Roscommon town.
Other works will include new or upgraded pumping stations being built across the county.
It is hoped that most of the initial works will take place at night to avoid disruption.
