A young Athlone woman says she's glad to have had the skills to be able to help in saving a man's life after he was pulled from the River Shannon last year.
Karyn Martin was working at Sean's Bar in August of last year when the alarm was raised by a passer-by.
She'd previously done some training as part of her study in pre-nursing, and for social care work, and she says this experience kicked in automatically on the day.
The man was unconscious when he was pulled from the water, but he had a weak pulse.
Karyn was officially recognised for her response to the incident by Athlone River Safety Awareness Group last week.
She has also joined the group as a volunteer following on from her experience last year.
