Iarnrod Éireann must increase security on local rail routes in order to ensure protection of staff and customers.
That's according to one Longford woman and regular rail user, Maria Keelty after figures released to Shannonside FM News showed an increase in anti social behaviour complaints on local rail routes.
3,450 complaints were made between the Sligo Connolly route serving Longford and Leitrim and the Galway Hueston Route serving Roscommon in 2024.
Over 130 of those related to anti social behaviour such as disruptive passengers, open drug and alcohol use, intimidation and assault.
The figures have increased over the last two years, with general complaints from the routes almost doubling since 2022.
Maria Keelty says the Customer Service Officers on local rail services are put under extreme pressure when dealing with problem rail users.
