A sub aqua diver from Kildare who was visiting relatives on a summers day in Athlone last year found himself involved in a dramatic and challenging rescue of a woman from the River Shannon.
Conal Dolan was speaking on the Let's Talk programme this week ahead of a special online version of the National Water Safety Awards.
A total of 51 lives were saved over the last two years and the rescuers were honoured at an online Water Safety Ireland’s National Annual Awards Ceremony on Tuesday evening.
Conal Dolan who’s a member of Lough Derg Sub Aqua club was visiting his aunt who lives beside the Shannon in Athlone in June of 2019 when he became involved in a rescue.
He says that while he’s a good swimmer he did find the experience quite challenging.
