An academic study by the Energy Institute at UCD has found a significant level of dissatisfaction in the Just Transition process in the Ballyleague-Lanesboro area.
Two researchers spent several weeks in the village on the Longford-Roscommon border in late 2019 and into 2020 to gauge the impact of the decarbonisation process on communities affected by the closure of power stations and the end of the peat industry.
Dr Aparajita Banerjee and her colleague presented some of their initial findings at a special ESRI seminar last week, and found that the Just Transition programme may need to be broadened to address concerns over training, and its response to communities affected by the loss of peat.
Dr Banerjee has been speaking to Kevin McGillicuddy, and firstly explained how her status as an outsider helped her engage with the community in a unique way
