A first-time candidate in the local elections has described the experience as “a nine-month job interview”.
Sharon Garland ran in the Carrick-on-Shannon area in Co Leitrim, as an Independent candidate.
She got 240 first preference votes but fell well short of getting elected.

She says the election cost her over €2,000 and she knocked on over 2,500 doors during the campaign.
Sharon has been speaking to Eoghan Murphy about the experience.
