The Garda Representative Association member for the Sligo/|Leitrim division says members need better protection when they are out policing, particularly in rural areas.
Ray Wims says he commends his colleague's bravery during an incident in Mohill on Tuesday night when their patrol car was rammed by a jeep and he says they were lucky to escape serious injury.
Speaking on Let's Talk on Shannonside FM this afternoon Ray Wims says gardai in rural areas need to have access to an armed back-up unit, as well as having bigger patrol vehicles that will give them better protection in the event of being rammed.
