Former District Court Judge Kevin Kilraine believes the mandatory retirement age of 70 for judges needs to be examined by the government.
The Leitrim man stepped down from the bench a few weeks ago after reaching the mandatory age despite feeling well enough to continue in the role.
The former solicitor, who was a judge for 15 years in the north-west circuit of Leitrim and Sligo, also believes that people's thoughts on judges being too soft when it comes to handing out jail terms is incorrect.
In a wide-ranging interview, he also addresses the public perception of the free legal aid system and his hopes for the future.
He has been speaking to Kevin McGillicuddy and first expressed his annoyance at being forced to retire at the age of 70:
