The mother of a child with special educational needs is pleading with the Department of Education to open more autism units in Athlone, as her son has nowhere to go.
Michelle Lynch says her 12 year old son Gareth is due to start secondary school in September, but there is no place for him as the only autism unit in the town is full.
Her plea comes after a report from the Children's Ombudsman Dr Niall Muldoon, who says the state is failing children with special educational needs.
Michelle says his development will be hugely impacted if he can't secure a place.
