Tony Smith from Ballyjamesduff in County Cavan is the father of a young man who died as a result of a car crash 12 years ago.
His only son, Anthony, was the passenger in a car driven by his friend that veered off the road in the early hours of September 11th 2005.
Just a few hours later, the 21 year old was pronounced dead.
Tony has been listening to our debate about the controversial drink driving legislation – Transport Minister Shane Ross is sponsoring a bill which proposes a mandatory driving ban for all drivers caught over the alcohol limit.
In recent days we’ve been hearing that Galway East TD Sean Canney has joined a number of TDs who want to vote against the bill while organisations such as PARC say such measures are long overdue.
However, Tony says while he does not support drink driving there is ‘nothing wrong with having one and driving’ and claims ‘such laws will be to the detriment of rural areas’
