A silent demonstration has been taking place outside the Tesco premises in Carrick on Shannon this morning following on from a meeting in the town last night.

The meeting which was attended by around 300 local residents was called to further debate proposals to accomodate around 130 people in the town in a new " integration centre" model of providing accomodation for asylum seekers.

Former Fine Gael councillor and local auctioneer Gordon Hughes was appointed as one of a few local spokesperson for the Ballinamore Community Group.

He spoke to the Joe Finnegan Show today about their concerns for the development of thew town and it's ability to meet the needs of such a dramatic increase in its local population.
