Ballinamore Sean O’Heslin’s ended a 31-year wait for a Leitrim SFC title today with a 1-16 to 0-17 victory over Mohill at Avant Money Pairc Sean MacDiarmada.
Niall McGovern scored a decisive late goal and his side were crowned champions after holding off a late resurgence from last year’s champions.
The opening 15 minutes set the tone for a tight contest with Dominic Corrigan’s men leading 0-5 to 0-4 at this point.
Three minutes later Jordan Reynolds restored parity and the sides were level on four more occasions before a Shane Quinn point saw Mohill lead 0-10 to 0-9 at half-time.
Yet again the sides were level within five minutes of the restart before points from Keith Beirne (two) and Keith Keegan gave Mohill a three-point cushion.
Ballinamore responded impressively Dominic Corrigan’s men drew level once again on 55 minutes after hitting four of the next five scores.
Two minutes later Niall McGovern found the net before points from Daniel Beck and Keith Beirne left two points between them in the third minute of injury time.
Mohill pushed hard for an equaliser but there was none forthcoming as Ballinamore ran out two-point winners resulting in their 21st ever county title.
