Longford's Cian McPhillips secures automatic spot in European U20 final

Cian McPhillips booked his place in the European Under-20 1500m after safely navigating the semi-final.

McPhillips who moved up from the 800 metres finished third in today’s second semi-final in Tallinn securing an automatic qualification spot for Saturday’s final.

The Longford man posted 3:48.67, less than a second behind race winner Ylies Mihoubi of France and Rick Van Riel of the Netherlands who also booked their place in the final.

Mihobui won out in 3:47.59 and Van Riel was second in 3:48.67. Fourth placed Kane Elliot of Great Britain took the final automatic qualifying place.

There was no luck for Dubliner Sean O’Donoghue who clocked 3:51.64 for seventh place in the first semi-final and did not progress.

The 1500 metre final is set for Saturday July 17 at 4.35pm Irish time.
