Cian McPhillips gets his European indoor championships campaign underway in heat one of the 800 metres tomorrow.
McPhillips has the fastest personal best in the field with the top two in this heat qualifying automatically for the semi-final.
However, the Longford man will be under pressure from Poland’s Bartosz Kitlinski, who’s best is just 0.42 seconds slower than the Longford man.
Ryan Clarke (Netherlands), Pieter Sisk (Belgium) and Britain’s Thomas Randolph should all feature. All three are less than a second slower than McPhillips.
Four time European medallist; Ireland’s Mark English has been drawn in heat five along with Sweden’s Andreas Kramer. Kramer is number four seed in Europe this year.
The top two in each of the five heats qualify automatically for Saturday’s semi-final. The two fastest non-qualifiers from the five heats will also progress to the semi-final.
McPhillips heat is set for 10:05am on Friday. Indeed, the Longford man is taking part in his second European indoor championship, having made the semi-final in 2021.
