Cian McPhillips has been ruled out of the World indoor athletics championships after suffering a stress fracture.
McPhillips race in last week’s European indoor 800m championship semi-final and had qualified for next week’s world championships. However, injury has now ruled McPhillips out of the championship.
McPhillips was tripped in his heat and was subsequently re-instated to the semi-final. However, it appears the trip also inflicted injury on the Longford man.
In a statement to Shannonside Sport, issued via Longford athletics club said; “An eventful heat at the European Indoors in which he fell to the track following a tangle of legs may very likely have contributed to the onset of the injury”.
“Having then been advanced to the semi-final; Cian was unable to maintain his strong pace in the final 300 metres as the discomfort in his leg would certainly have limited his movement”.
“Following his return to Ireland, a scan taken at the Santry Sports Clinic confirmed the stress fracture”.
A six-week recovery time is expected for McPhillips before resume full training can resume. The Longford man will then aim to qualify for World Athletics championships in Tokyo from September 13-21.
The World Indoor Championships take place in Nanjing, China from March 21-23.
